MODFYR RESEARCH · STRUCTURED DATA
Complete LocalBusiness Schema Was Associated With 98% Maps Search Presence
What 148 real local business audits reveal about LocalBusiness schema, FAQ markup, review markup, Website rankings, and Maps Search Coverage.
Brian "BB" Bisges · Modfyr · 2026 Research
Structured data is often treated as a technical SEO checkbox. This analysis looks at whether stronger schema implementation was actually associated with stronger local search performance across 148 real businesses. We compare complete, partial, and missing LocalBusiness schema, then examine aligned FAQ and review content + schema against businesses without that alignment.
Complete LocalBusiness schema was associated with much broader Website and Maps visibility
Of 148 businesses, 49 had complete LocalBusiness schema, 20 were partial, and 79 had no LocalBusiness schema. Complete-schema businesses averaged 79% Maps Search Coverage versus 49% for partial and 47% for no schema. Website Search Coverage was 44% for complete schema, 28% for partial, and 15% with no schema. Website Top-10 incidence followed the same pattern: 78%, 60%, and 44%, respectively.
The clearest schema difference was search coverage, not rank alone
FAQ content + aligned FAQ schema was associated with substantially stronger search presence
Fifteen businesses met the combined FAQ content + schema alignment standard. They averaged 51% Website Search Coverage and 85% Maps Search Coverage, versus 24% and 55% among the other 133 businesses. Website Top-10 incidence was 93% versus 53%.
FAQ alignment showed its largest separation in Website visibility
Review content + aligned review schema also tracked with broader search visibility
Twelve businesses met the combined ratings/reviews content + schema alignment standard. They averaged 52% Website Search Coverage and 80% Maps Search Coverage, versus 24% and 56% among the other 136 businesses. Website Top-10 incidence was 75% versus 56%.
Aligned review content + schema was associated with broader coverage
Schema quality mattered more than simply having markup
The LocalBusiness results did not show a simple schema-present versus schema-absent story. Partial schema improved some measures, but complete schema separated most clearly on Website and Maps Search Coverage. That makes completeness and alignment more useful signals to examine than markup presence alone.
Schema presence alone was not the strongest pattern. Complete and content-aligned structured data was associated with broader search visibility.
What this means for local business structured data
- Complete the LocalBusiness entity. Include accurate identity, location, contact, hours, and other relevant properties instead of stopping at a minimal schema shell.
- Keep schema aligned with visible content. Structured data should reinforce what customers and search engines can verify on the page.
- Use FAQ and review markup only when supported. Mark up genuine visible FAQs, ratings, and reviews rather than adding unsupported structured data.
- Review schema when the business changes. Update structured data when hours, services, locations, ratings, or other business facts change.
Structured data works best when it reinforces visible, accurate business information
The strongest pattern in this sample was not that schema guaranteed a better rank. It was that complete and aligned structured data tended to appear alongside much broader search visibility. The findings are observational, but they support treating LocalBusiness, FAQ, and review markup as part of the page's broader entity and content quality rather than isolated technical tags.
Methodology and limitations
This analysis uses the same cleaned 148-business dataset as the 2026 Modfyr Local Search Ranking Factors Study. Each business was measured using one category-relevant local query. Website and Maps visibility were measured from nine search locations across an approximately 72-square-mile area.
For average-rank analysis, businesses not found within the top 50 were treated as rank 51. Search Coverage represents the percentage of measured search locations where the business ranked. Lower rank is better; higher Search Coverage is better.
The findings are observational associations. They do not prove that adding schema markup by itself directly causes a ranking or Search Coverage increase.

What is LocalBusiness schema and what did this study measure?
LocalBusiness schema is structured data that describes a local business in a machine-readable format. This study classified each audited business as having complete, partial, or no LocalBusiness schema, then compared those groups with observed Website and Maps search performance.
Did complete LocalBusiness schema correlate with stronger local search visibility?
Yes. The 49 businesses with complete LocalBusiness schema averaged 79% Maps Search Coverage and 44% Website Search Coverage, compared with 47% and 15% among the 79 businesses with no LocalBusiness schema. The findings are observational and do not prove schema alone caused the difference.
Was partial LocalBusiness schema better than having no schema?
The results were mixed. Partial-schema businesses performed better than the no-schema group on Website rank, Website Search Coverage, and several Top-10 measures, but their Maps Search Coverage was nearly the same. Complete schema showed the clearest overall separation.
What did the study find about FAQ content and FAQ schema?
Fifteen businesses had verified FAQ content + schema alignment. They averaged 51% Website Search Coverage, 85% Maps Search Coverage, and 93% Website Top-10 incidence, versus 24%, 55%, and 53% among businesses without verified alignment. The export does not preserve visible FAQ content and FAQ schema as separate fields, so those components are not split into separate cohorts.
What did the study find about ratings/reviews content and review schema?
Twelve businesses had verified ratings/reviews content + schema alignment. They averaged 52% Website Search Coverage and 80% Maps Search Coverage, versus 24% and 56% among businesses without verified alignment. As with FAQ, the exported audit preserves the combined alignment result rather than separate content and schema fields.
Does adding schema markup guarantee better rankings?
No. Schema helps search engines interpret business information, but rankings also reflect relevance, proximity, prominence, reviews, content, authority, competition, and other factors. This study identifies associations rather than causal effects.
What should a local business prioritize in its structured data?
Prioritize complete and accurate LocalBusiness markup that reinforces visible business information. Where the page genuinely contains FAQs, ratings, or reviews, keep the corresponding structured data aligned with that visible content rather than adding markup that the page does not support.
